Be Joburg’s First Female Boxing Star in Urban Amazonia

urban amazonia

In the old days, women and boxing used to have more to do with cardboard and string than with hand-to-hand combat. Punch was a refreshingly dangerous drink, a round was a circular adjective and there used to be a need to put a ring on a women’s finger and not to put a woman into a ring. In 2013, this evolution will reach the next step as 20 beautiful Joburg women are set to compete in a boxing spectacle like no other in Urban Amazonia. Urban Amazonia is a boxing competition that will see a group of specially selected, gorgeous ladies go head to head in a mix of beauty and bruises, with all money raised going to charity. The battling Amazonians will be aged between 18 and 30 and will receive 9 months of rigorous training before

Mad Swimmers Making a Splash

Jean Craven and Tim Ziehl are not your average swimmers. Like Nemo’s dad, these skilled water-lovers decided to use their aquatic abilities for good and, in 2009, set up a charity called ‘Jean and Tim Swim.’ Little did they know that this simple step (or initial plunge) would become madswimmer.com. Madswimmer is an initiative that stems from two men’s love of endurance swimming and an overwhelming desire to help others. The pair’s first charity swim in 2009 was from Europe to Africa. This journey took the swimmers across the Straits of Gibraltar and totalled a mammoth 17 km. In 2010 Jean, along with newcomers Evan Feldman and Colin Franks, swam the 12 km’s from Asia to Europe- a route that took them through sections

Making a difference through social media Social media has covered some fascinating ground. From its inception and almost supernatural ability to connect long lost friends, colleagues and lovers, to giving people the chance to share everything from their nail polish preferences to their bowel movements, social media has infiltrated each and every corner of our daily lives. But it’s not all about bored narcissists sitting at their PC’s that make up this virtual universe. Thanks to #TBDZA (Twitter-driven blanket drive), this powerful medium has been used to achieve massive charitable goals in South Africa, and looks to grow even more this year. #TBDZA Is the country’s largest social media-fuelled

Where futures are created As far as education and the youth of South Africa are concerned, we are told endlessly of the shortcomings, anguish and projected bleak futures of our young people.  It’s not all doom and gloom, however, and this can be seen vividly in the activities, goals and dedication of City Kidz. This inner city, private school provides premium education to pupils from Grade R through to Grade 7.  Unlike other schools in the area that occupy high-rise buildings and dingy play areas, City Kidz provides a safe, stimulating and exciting environment for its learners.  This includes clean, brightly-lit classrooms and a 3000m2 outdoor, open-air recreational space. At City Kidz, over 250 pupils are
