Making a Difference in the Fight for our Rhinos

fighting for our rhinos

With already over 500 rhinos killed this year alone, even the most ardent and ignorant of armchair conservationists have begun to realise the extent of the shocking slaughter of one of our favourite and iconic African creatures. The senseless murder of an animal simply for the perceived medicinal value its horn seems utterly ridiculous until you realise that the price of powdered rhino horn is selling for more than gold, platinum or cocaine in the east. In such a predicament, the only way to make a difference is to stop talking about the problem and, instead, to act against it. This is exactly what Audrey Raubenheimer has set out to do. In October this year, the Durban-born conservation enthusiast decided to do her bit in

Art, Heritage, Culture (and Breakfast) with Liz at Lancaster

liz at lancaster B&B

Liz Delmont is a lady who, in many ways, personifies the cultural and professional world of Johannesburg. Not only is she an art historian, cultural practitioner, academic and university lecturer; she also runs and owns a successful bed and breakfast in the suburbs of the city. The story of her B&B, Liz at Lancaster, can be traced back to a conference in Chicago in the 1990s. The event was hosted by the city’s North Western University and attended by many of the world’s top artists and art historians. Liz fondly remembers staying in one of many B&B’s situated nearby, run by local parents whose grown-up children had left home. This B&B culture left such a mark on Liz that she decided to open her own

Happy Birthday to US!

April 20th is an auspicious day - not only is it a Friday, and a week before Freedom Day, but it's also What's Up’s third anniversary. Three years ago we started out as a humble blog letting people know what amazing and quirky events were happening in Cape Town, introducing you to some interesting people, and sharing some of our favourite foodie, wine, tourism and other discoveries. The 2010 Fifa World Cup was a highlight, as has been the rapid adoption of social media as a primary form of communication. Building on this great foundation, we've expanded rapidly, adding What's Up Jozi, What's Up Durban, What's Up PE, What's Up South Africa, as well as partnering with STA World Traveller Liam

City Kidz

City Kidz Classroom

Where futures are created As far as education and the youth of South Africa are concerned, we are told endlessly of the shortcomings, anguish and projected bleak futures of our young people.  It’s not all doom and gloom, however, and this can be seen vividly in the activities, goals and dedication of City Kidz. This inner city, private school provides premium education to pupils from Grade R through to Grade 7.  Unlike other schools in the area that occupy high-rise buildings and dingy play areas, City Kidz provides a safe, stimulating and exciting environment for its learners.  This includes clean, brightly-lit classrooms and a 3000m2 outdoor, open-air recreational space. At City Kidz, over 250 pupils are

Jaco van Wyk: This man is going places..

jaco-van-wyk-snapbill

In the world of business and enterprise development, it is often the ability to spot gaps and anticipate trends that separates those successful people from the rest.  There is also that inherent feeling of restlessness, always looking to improve upon what has already been achieved and to explore new possibilities.  Jaco van Wyk possesses these qualities in abundance. Having graduated from the University of Pretoria in 2005 with a BIS multimedia degree, Jaco has gone from strength to strength, founding, designing and developing creative and online companies. At only 28, Jaco already has an impressive CV.  During his studies he started his first successful business; a creative agency called 4Design Creative

Liam Kelly: 2012 STA World Explorer – On the Road Again..

After completing his first assignment which he started in Washington DC on November 24th, 2011, Liam has begun the next chapter of his worldwide peregrinations - his trek accross North America. (Just a little background though: You will recall that  What's Up Cape Town and What's Up Jozi supported this (then) 19-year-old Cape Town student in his efforts  to beat 4000 others Countrywide to win the experience of a lifetime in a national 2012 World Explorer competition run by STA Travel South Africa (www.statravel.co.za). We did it here). This is the first for South Africa, with all the previous World Explorers chosen from other Countries around the world. His successful entry was based on four competition steps: a motivational
