Be Joburg’s First Female Boxing Star in Urban Amazonia

urban amazonia

In the old days, women and boxing used to have more to do with cardboard and string than with hand-to-hand combat. Punch was a refreshingly dangerous drink, a round was a circular adjective and there used to be a need to put a ring on a women’s finger and not to put a woman into a ring. In 2013, this evolution will reach the next step as 20 beautiful Joburg women are set to compete in a boxing spectacle like no other in Urban Amazonia. Urban Amazonia is a boxing competition that will see a group of specially selected, gorgeous ladies go head to head in a mix of beauty and bruises, with all money raised going to charity. The battling Amazonians will be aged between 18 and 30 and will receive 9 months of rigorous training before

cape town fish market rugby promotion

Having already destroyed their opponents in the first two tests, this Saturday the Springboks are out to complete a series whitewash. The English, on the other hand, will be hoping to taste success against our green and gold warriors for the first time this tour. Whatever the result, Cape Town Fish Market promises to make the taste of victory or defeat delicious with a unique and mouth watering promotion.  Here’s how it works: this Saturday, 23 June, you enter the Cape Town Fish Market restaurant of your choice, making sure you are there well before the 17h00 kickoff. If you predict the Bokke will win the evening’s match, order a West Coast Potjie. If you think the English will finish the series on a wining note,

Let the countdown begin

remembering 2010

With the start of Euro 2012, soccer fans around the world are breathing a collective sigh of relief. Having been starved of top quality, international football for far too long, the BIG Men at the top are finally at work in Poland and the Ukraine. As usual, they are giving us the greenest of pitches and the sharpest of televised images of those sweat-exploding, ultra-slow motion headers and overhead, HD shots. The only problem is that, mixed with these feelings of satisfaction, South Africans cannot deny that sadly nostalgic, post 2010 feeling- not so long ago, it was all happening right here. In fact, it was exactly two years ago today. It is hard to believe that just 730 days ago our country was the most exciting place to be on

The Discovery 702 Walk the Talk

Discover 702 Walk the Talk

The lack of a nearby beach or mountain means that, for many citizens of Joburg, exercise is usually confined to several rushed sessions on an exercise bike, a cramped run around a squash court or hasty jog around the block. This all changes once a year as thousands take to the streets for the Discovery 702 Walk the Talk. The Discovery 702 Walk the Talk is an event like no other, shutting down many of the major routes in the city and opening them up to pedestrians. These colourful streams of festive perambulators are able to see the suburbs in a much more interesting way than the usual blur-out-of-the car window view, as they take part in this fantastic event. The event takes place on July 22nd, beginning and ending at Marks
