Michael McIntyre Live at The Coca Cola Dome

Michael McIntyre

South Africa’s love of comedy has seen a steady stream of the world’s best comedians visit our shores in recent years. This pattern continues this month when the best-selling, British comic Michael McIntyre entertains Cape Town and Joburg for just one night in each city. Michael McIntyre is probably best known to South African audiences from his televised appearances in Live at the Apollo, Mock The Week and Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow. Although seen grinning through your TV set, McIntyre is particularly adept as a live, stand up comedian. In fact, his 2012 tour got him into The Guinness Book of Records as the biggest-selling comedian ever, with over 70 000 tickets sold for his shows in the United Kingdom

The Bowls Big Band Live Every Monday at The Zoo Lake Bowling Club

The Bowls Big Band

Aside from hosting one of Joburg’s favourite pubs, The Zoo Lake Bowling Club has made serious contributions to the city’s music scene in recent years. In addition to the popular jam sessions hosted on Thursday evenings and live jazz on Sundays, the venue is now home to a brand new big band, proudly calling itself The Bowls Big Band. The Bowls Big Band is the brainchild of local saxophonist Janus van der Merwe. He recognised the need for more, visible jazz performances in the city- places where local jazz musicians can play together on a regular basis and raise both the profile and standard of the city's jazz scene. The result is a full big band, complete with classic arrangements by the likes of Count Basie and Quincy

The New Money Range From Love Jozi

Love Jozi

‘Been there, done that, got the t-shirt’ is an over-used cliché that often doubles as a lie. In most cases, no t-shirt is actually present- just a bored sense of pseudo achievement. In Joburg, however, this saying can be celebrated in the proper way, thanks to an entire fashion range that is inspired by the city. It is aptly named Love Jozi. Love Jozi is one of the city’s biggest fans. Now into its 15th range of t-shirt designs, The New Money Range, the brand continues to celebrate the city of gold, this time focussing on South Africa’s newly designed bank notes and Joburg’s affinity with economy and industry. Along with its iconic t-shirts and other fashion designs, Love Jozi also presents a varied selection of other

Stand Up For Our Rhinos with DeHorn South Africa

DeHorn South Africa

The statistics about rhino poaching in South Africa tell a sickening story. With an average of 2 animals disappearing per day and over 160 killed this year so far, these beautiful beasts are being driven to extinction. That is unless you, the average South African, does something about it. This is the message behind the new shock-conservation initiative, DeHorn South Africa. De-Horn South Africa has a unique approach to the crime of rhino poaching. With a carefully constructed business framework and a staff that includes conservationists and medical professionals, the initiative seeks to raise awareness internationally by ‘de-horning’ the people of South Africa.  For men, this ‘dehorning’ is a simple, professionally

Cesar’s Way and All About Cats Present Escape From Planet Earth at Ster Kinekor Cresta

Cesar's Way Escape From Planet Earth Screening

Several years have passed since the heyday of the talking animal movie. Thankfully those St Bernhards with American accents and cockney poodles have been gracefully retired and replaced by modern animation and things that explode. What has not disappeared, regrettably, is the continued abuse of animals at the hands of people. Next month, however, you have the chance to make a difference in the lives of abused animals by watching- of all things- a movie about aliens. On April 10th, Cesar’s Way and All About Cats Magazine present Escape From Planet Earth, screened at Ster Kinekor, Cresta. Your entrance fee for the screening is any animal-friendly donation, including dog and cat food, blankets toys and any other necessity that

The African Passion

Tomorrow, one of the most remarkable and eagerly anticipated new musicals will premiere at Durban’s Umlazi Oasis Fellowship Centre. From there, it will tour to 5 other major cities throughout the country over the Easter period. With a cast of 20, a choir of 60 and a musical journey that includes everything from gospel and R ‘n’ B to isicathamiya and opera, there are few shows as ambitious and spectacular as The African Passion. In April, it will be coming to Jozi. Curl up and Dye at The Old Mutual Theatre on the Square

Curl Up And Dye

This month, the Old Mutual Theatre on the Square will be hosting a brand new take on a South African Classic. It’s Sue Pam Grant’s iconic comedy Curl Up And Dye, revised and revisited for the current generation of theatregoers. Curl Up And Dye was a smash hit when it premiered in 1989 and attracted a wide audience from all corners of society. The play’s initial success was due to its ability to tap into South Africa’s popular as well as political culture of the time, providing the audience with a fly-on-the-wall view of a day in the life of five women in a struggling hair salon in Johannesburg’s inner city as the mechanisms of apartheid were beginning to crumble outside. This fresh, bold take on the classic story

John Cleese Live at The Teatro, Montecasino

John Cleese Live

When John Cleese came to South Africa in 2011, nothing special happened. An old-looking, tall Englishman took to the stage wearing sensible clothes and sensible shoes. This is not what they call comic genius. When the man spoke, however, the pieces that make up a comic legend became evident and each and every person in the theatre felt lucky to have been in his presence. If you missed this experience, you have the chance to see John Cleese Live later this year at The Teatro at Montecasino. John Cleese’s story in show business is remarkable. He was there at the tail end of radio comedy and then became part of Monty Python, arguably the most influential comedy team in television history. Rather than resting on his laurels (a bit
