For musicians, jokes about drummers have become legendary gig companions. The shortcomings and stereotyped personas of these percussion-loving stage dwellers are highlighted in these stories, often accompanied by howls of laughter. But there is a drummer coming to Joburg who transcends any such stereotype- one of the best and most respected musicians around.
Jojo Mayer is a drumming god. Born in Switzerland and currently living in New York City, the 49-year old is best known as the Drum ‘n’ Bass drummer- the man who created entirely new drumming techniques in his quest to perform the most complex and modern drum grooves live and on an acoustic drum kit.
With impeccable technique, an unparalleled wealth of experience and the ability to make any groove come alive, his sound is unmistakable. Just look at this.
Mayer is in South Africa as part of his Perfect Balance Clinic Tour 2012, leading workshops in Cape Town on October 7th and Joburg the following day. The Joburg leg will take place from 18h30 on the evening of October 8th at Tanz Café.
The chance to see a modern music legend in such an intimate setting is something that drummers and lovers of great music cannot miss. Tickets cost R100 and can be bought online or at the door.
