The people of Johannesburg do not operate well in cold conditions. The past few months have seen miserable faces- barely visible through thick layers of wool and polyester- venturing out by day and deserted streets at night. This weekend signifies the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel and the start of the end of Joburg’s hibernation. Tomorrow, it’s spring day.
The spring weekend is packed full of diverse events, all perfectly placed to celebrate the return of the warm weather. Perhaps the most prominent event on September 1st is Highveld Stereo’s Joburg Day Music Fest, but the party does not stop there.
The same day sees the staging of the Sprite Uncontainable Hip-Hop Fest- featuring the incomparable Talib Kweli-, Monster Bass Spring Fest at The Woods, The Sands’ Red Bull Studio Live Spring Day Street Party, Spring Fling at Eden, Spring Mayhem at Vacca Matta and Little Dragon live at MOAD.
The weekend also sees the exceptional Spring Sauvignon Blanc Festival taking place at Montecasino, while The Getaway Show- at The Coca Cola Dome- gets you in the mood for all those outdoor activities you have planned for the coming months.
On Sunday, September 2nd, one of the city’s regular and most popular events returns to the tranquil and iconic Zoo Lake. It’s time for Jazz on the Lake, a famous live music concert that signals the start of not only Heritage Month in the city, but also the diverse Arts Alive Festival. The same day also sees the annual Kensington Spring Fair returning to the suburb’s beautiful Rhodes Park.
With so much to do to welcome back the sunshine, this weekend promises to be one of the highlights of the year in the city of gold.
