Celebrate all thing South African on National Braai Day

national braai day 24 September 2012

September 24th is a vitally important day in South Africa. It is National Heritage Day, a public holiday on which all South Africans are encouraged to celebrate their cultural heritage and the diversity of their beliefs and traditions.

In 2005, National Heritage Day was re-branded National Braai Day. This development came in recognition of one of South Africa’s favourite culinary past times; sitting around a braai and sharing the experience with others. Across all racial, political and religious lines, sitting outside around a fire with friends, food and a drink is simply one of the best things to do.

With temperatures in Joburg set to be in the early to mid twenties this coming Monday, under cloudless blue skies, the idea of braaing at home, at friends or in a designated public braai area is unbeatable. All you need now do is go out and buy the charcoal, meat, veg and starch. Don’t forget the firelighters!

In addition to celebrating all things South African and enjoying the warmth from the braai, the people sitting around it and the September sunshine, there are still more things to do on the 24th.

Why not visit The Ultimate Beef Show at The Birchwood Hotel? Perhaps a trip to The Good Food and Wine Show at the Coca Cola Dome is a good option, or maybe a drive to Stonehaven on Vaal where you can enjoy the day on the riverbank. There is also the chance to create your own movie at The Museum of African Diaspora.

However you choose to spend your day, from all of us at Whatsupjozi, we hope you have the best time in out favourite city of gold.
