As far as jazz music is concerned, Joburg is an urban paradox. The city boasts many of the finest jazz musicians in the country, yet not the venues to support them. All this changes this coming weekend as many of these musicians- plus several high profile, international acts- take the stages by storm at The Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival 2012 in Newtown.
The Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival is Joburg’s biggest and most popular jazz festival. The buzz of anticipation around each instalment is tangible on the local music scene with ongoing speculation as to who will be topping the bill. This year, the like of Earl Klugh, Kurt Elling, Wycliff Gordon, Lizz Wright, Jane Monheit Eddie Palmieri, the Duke Ellington Orchestra and Monty Alexander will the main international attractions.
The local jazz scene will be ably represented by favourites Afrika Mkhize, Marcus Wyatt, Thandiswa Mazwai, Caiphus Semenya and many more.
There are few things better than experiencing outstanding live music. Add this to the ideal, urban environment of Newtown’s Mary Fitzgerald Square and you have one of the best weekends on the Joburg calendar.
