Zoo Lake and its usually tranquil surrounds are in for an abrupt change this weekend. On Saturday 6 October, the resident ducks, geese, dog-walkers and joggers will be replaced by one of the city’s most colourful festivals. It’s time for Joburg Pride.
Joburg Pride is an annual celebration of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) identity and sexual diversity. It consists of a week-long festival of cultural, social, activist and entertainment events held in Johannesburg, culminating in the iconic street parade and mardi-gras hosted by the Zoo Lake Sports Club.
The parade itself is a fantastic spectacles, bringing together members of the LGBTI community in an effort to create public visibility, celebrate together and to build confidence in their identity and diversity.
The parade starts at 11am, with the subsequent party taking revellers right through to 6pm. With live entertainment, a beer garden, food stalls and great company, Joburg Pride promises- once again- to be one of the greatest parties around.
